Yesterday I had an interview with a recruiter for a job I’m interested in. She gave me the option to conduct the interview over the phone, or to come in and meet face to face. It was my choice. And it was smart of her to make it my choice. Why? Because whichever option I chose would tell her a lot about me, my commitment to and/or interest in the position, and my level of ambition overall.
I didn’t hesitate. I didn’t have to think about it, really. I chose to get off my ass, put on a dress, slap on some lipstick, and drive to her office. Why? Because I am very interested in this job. Because I am ambitious. Because I’m tired of sitting at my desk staring at LinkedIn. And you should be, too.
Did she and I have coffee? No, we had water. Because this was an actual interview, not just a networking opportunity or initial conversation. If this job doesn’t pan out, will I lose contact with her? NO. Because there will be other opportunities through her and her agency and I just made a valuable connection. So if that happens, guess what? I’ll probably invite her out for coffee so we can discuss other possibilities.
If you feel your job search is going nowhere, or your career seems to be foundering, or you just don’t know what to do next then take the advice in this article right here. Call some people. Go to a networking event. And have some coffee.
Where did I find this article? On the recruiting agency’s Facebook Page. Because I follow it, and the Page of the company with the job I’m so interested in. You should be doing that, too. But when you’re at the coffee shop, be at the coffee shop. Get your nose out of that smartphone and engage in some actual face time. Because that is still how it’s done.
