In 2010 Marge and Carrie Padian established Warmth For All, an organization based in Portland, Oregon that creates, collects, and distributes hand-knit and crocheted cold weather items for persons in need. Since then, the organization has grown to include chapters in Salem, OR and Myerstown, PA. Most of the chapters work with homeless shelters or transitional housing charities.
In January of 2016, and in response to the growing refugee crisis, I made the decision to establish an Atlanta chapter that addressed the needs of Georgia’s refugee population. I have partnered with the Atlanta office of the International Rescue Committee, and in our first two months we collected five hats, one pair of mittens, and five scarves from six participants in addition to cash and yarn donations.
I worked with the managers of Atlanta’s Red Light Cafe on monthly stitch-ins for our group, and they generously provided the space free of charge, as well as some excellent entertainment from The Band of Desperate Men. Our stitch-ins are currently on hiatus for the summer. Check back here in August for our fall 2016/winter 2017 dates!
